Episode 21 of the Lu and Bean Read podcast features author Emma Bland Smith reading from and discussing her picture book JOURNEY: Based on the True Story of OR7, the Most Famous Wolf in the West.
About the book and the author
JOURNEY is a picture book inspired by the true story of a gray wolf named OR7 who wandered from his birthplace in Northern Oregon. His nearly 2,000-mile journey took three years, landing him in Northern California. His was the first appearance of a wolf in California in nearly 100 years. Along the way, scientists snapped photos of him making his way alone, playing with coyotes and eventually heading back to Oregon where he found a mate. As the OR7’s story is captured in media headlines, a young girl takes an interest in his journey. Smith’s book captures the complex interplay between the natural world and our human interests. JOURNEY is illustrated by Robin James and published by Little Bigfoot.
Emma Bland Smith lives in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood with her husband, Alex, and two kids, Everett (11) and Cate (8). She has master’s degrees in French and library science, and her past careers have included magazine editor and French teacher. Today, she works part-time as a librarian and fills the rest of her time volunteering at her kids’ school, leading a Girl Scouts troop, driving to baseball practice, cooking, gardening and writing.
