As a member of the leadership team of the Kid Lit Exchange, I receive a steady flow of the newest picture books. These two new books (both published in January 2018) showed up last week, and we read them back-to-back at bedtime one night. We were tickled to find out they both dealt with a subject we haven’t seen much in picture books—moms who travel, and the kids who miss them back home.

We are happy to recommend both of these books for families with traveling mamas. While they deal with the same subject matter, they each have a distinct tone and a fresh voice.

Thanks to the Kid Lit Exchange for the review copy of this book. As always, all opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links, which means that Lu and Bean Read may receive a small commission (at no additional cost to you) on products purchased through external vendors.

Books about moms who travel

Love, Mama by Jeanette Bradley

LOVE, MAMA is author/illustrator Jeanette Bradley’s debut picture book, and she knocked it out of the park. Little Kipling the penguin waves goodbye to his mama as she floats away on an iceberg (which appears to be taking her to a really cool ship). Kipling expects Mama to come home soon, but she’s not back for dinner, bedtime, or even the next day. Kipling can’t have any fun without Mama. But one day he receives a package of all his favorite things and a special note that begins, “My love for you stretches across the wide ocean….” (Yes, mamas, it’s a bit of a tearjerker). Kipling learns that even when Mama is away from home, her love is great enough to bridge any physical divide. The book is filled with stunning, Arctic illustrations in calming, cool blues. This sweet tale released on January 2, 2018, from Roaring Brook Press.

Mama’s Business Trip Bunny’s Staycation by Lori Richmond

The title of this book had us giggling before we even cracked the cover. BUNNY’S STAYCATION turns the agony of mama’s business travel on its head. When Mama leaves for a week, Bunny’s papa encourages his little one to look on the bright side of things. Maybe Mama is away on business, but that doesn’t mean Bunny can’t have fun at home. Bunny and Papa design a week full of mini-vacays. In the bathroom, they visit the steamy tropics. In the kitchen, they create a winter wonderland. And in the backyard, it’s a safari! But Bunny still misses Mama. Soon it will be Friday—the day Mama returns—and Papa helps Bunny fill the long hours by creating one final staycation to welcome her home. These bright, colorful illustrations will cheer up lonely little ones—and they’ll love Bunny’s silly mismatching ears. BUNNY’S STAYCATION publishes on January 30, 2018 from Scholastic Press.
